Sullivan & Worcester LLP to Defend Landmark Internet Video and Video-on-Demand Patent
OCTOBER 4, 2000 - BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- The internationally known law firm, Sullivan & Worcester LLP, has been retained by USA Video Interactive (OTCBB: USVO; CDNX: US; www.usvo.com) to protect the company's rights under its pioneering 1992 store-and-forward video patent and to explore licensing and other revenue-generating possibilities of the patent. Paul Gupta, a leading patent litigator, will defend USA Video Interactive's patent. "I reviewed the patent and claims of prior art and believe it is strong and eminently enforceable," said Gupta, who also serves on the Boards of four national e-commerce and computer technology publications. "I particularly look forward to defending Internet patents granted before 1995; that this patent was filed in 1990 and granted in 1992 is very exciting both for me and for USA Video Interactive. I am looking forward to bringing the company's shareholders tangible benefits from this pioneering and visionary patent."
"Creating broad market awareness of this patent and leveraging it for maximum benefit will reinforce our business plan, help build new alliances, and strengthen existing ones," said Edwin Molina, President and CEO of USA Video Interactive. "This patent clearly differentiates our media distribution solutions in a growing and increasingly competitive global market."
The patent for store-and-forward video, # 5,130,792, was filed in 1990 and issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on July 14, 1992; it is considered a pioneer patent in the field of video-on-demand and Internet video. It has been cited by 133 other patents. In 1999, USA Video Interactive was awarded similar patents in England, France, Spain, Italy and Germany; the company has patents pending in Canada and Japan.
