MediaSentinel Technology

MediaSentinel is an anti-piracy device that embeds SmartMarks—invisible forensic information in every frame of video content. MediaSentinel works in professional video production environments, integrating with existing technologies, formats, and production workflow.
The MediaSentinel workstation uses SDI input and output to capture, SmartMark, and output standard format digital video. The SmartMark Generator, SmartMark Reader, SmartMark Database, and SmartMark Player/DEC Control are software components which run on the workstation.

The SmartMark Generator uses a random number generator to encode "payload data" to be associated with the authorized video. This payload data can be recovered by the SmartMark reader to provide forensic information about the source of the video. The SmartMark Reader extracts the SmartMark by comparing a suspected pirated video to the original video. The SmartMark data is interpreted to identify the source of the pirated video to enable criminal prosecution. For increased security the Reader requires knowing the key information used when embedding the SmartMark.

The fully scaleable ODBC-compliant SmartMark Database provides an automated archive of SmartMarked information, including the title, date, message length and other content-relevant attributes. This provides a single-source reference for storing and accessing SmartMark key data. The Database makes it easy to lookup the key information required for reading the SmartMarks embedded in a particular title.
