Law Enforcement How-To-Guide

Content Owners
First, SmartMark early and often. Every time you SmartMark a video asset, you provide an indelible forensic imprint that is truly invisible and unremovable.

As many as ten SmartMarks can be embedded into the same content and still be recovered in the forensics lab. Regular SmartMarking at distinct stages of content transfer, such as for screenings, digital dailies, special effects, or audio post-production, allow enforcement officials to determine later precisely which production area caused the leak.

When your content shows up pirated, send a copy of the suspected pirate video, along with the original source master used to create the SmartMark, to the service bureau or internal department that created the SmartMark initially. Your SmartMark Anti-Piracy Provider will be able to test the suspect video and provide you with a Forensics Report suitable for presentation in a court of law.

Law Enforcement Officers
When you discover potentially pirated content, contact the copyright holder to determine if it is likely to have been SmartMarked. If so, send a copy of the suspected pirate video, along with the original source master used to create the SmartMark, to the service bureau or internal department that created the SmartMark initially. The SmartMark Anti-Piracy Provider will be able to test the suspect video and provide you with a Forensics Report suitable for presentation in a court of law.
